I dont enjoy comparing movies to other movies and and I don’t beleive that any film is inherently bad. It’s why I have no ratings system and it’s why your receiving this instead of a “10 Best/Worst” list. A lot of time and effort goes into making these films from hundreds of people and I think to bash their efforts is disrespectful. I say that every movie is worth something and i genuinely believe that, even if it’s Hellboy (2019). So without further ado here are the 10 films that I enjoyed most this year, in release order.
1. SPIDER-MAN:INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
To receive a good Spider-Man film is one thing but to receive a great one is another thing entirely. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man is good but Into the Spider-Verse is great. It makes you wonder why they did live action films with him in the first place. I laughed, I cried, i marvelled at it’s beauty.
2. BOY ERASED
The media will tell you that the number of LGBT characters is on the rise, but when it started at zero, that’s pretty much a given. To have an LGBT film in 2019 is amazing but to have one based on a true story makes it even more so. If you still don’t understand why Conversion Therapy should be illegal worldwide, you need to see this film.
I loved the movie Big. I loved Zachary Levi in Tangled. I love the concept of a really good DC Comics film. Shazam! married all 3 of those in a way I wasn’t intending. If all DC films had been like this from the beginning, they could have achieved MCU status by now.
4. POKÉMON: DETECTIVE PICKACHU
I didn’t grow up trading the cards, playing the games or watching the show. If they are anywhere as near as good as this film then I really wish I had. Perfect for old-school fans and newbies alike, with possibly the best CGI all year. I’m smiling just thinking about it.
5. JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3: PARABELLUM
I don’t particularly enjoy violence or any amount of gore. When it’s shot like it’s a ballet though, I will make an exception. This is that exception. Beautiful colours, beautiful cinematography and a beautiful Keanu Reeves. Could not ask for more.
Another gay movie? Based on a gay icon? With some of the best songs ever written? Bonkers cinematography? Yes. Yes. A million times yes.
7. GODZILLA:KING OF THE MONSTERS
It’s giant monsters fighting other giant monsters. If you don’t like that concept then the little child inside you is probably dead. LONG LIVE THE KING!
8. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME
They showed how cool Mysterio is. His powers look stunning. Peter Parker is broken down time after time after time. This has what the MCU Spidey has been missing.
9. THE DEAD DON’T DIE
The most unique movie I saw all year. I genuinely don’t think there’s anything like it. For me it distanced Adam Driver from the Kylo-mania and reminded me how good an actor he really is. Also Bill Murray is there.
10. IT:CHAPTER 2
How did this end up on my list? Oh that’s right, it’s some of the best gay representation this year and it’s ridiculously entertaining. It genuinely shook me to my core and has eased me on the concept of watching horror films, if only a bit. Well done team. Genuinely.
Honourable Mention. THE FINAL ACT OF AVENGERS ENDGAME
After 10 years and 24 films, this is the payoff we deserve. I don’t think the first two acts are as good as Infinity War but this freaking act. It blew me away. I grinned like an idiot almost all the way through and ocassionaly cheered. For context, I won’t even talk during films. Both Endgame and Infinity War hit me in a way that I don’t expect to experience after Rise of Skywalker. To evry member of the MCU and to the late Stan Lee…..I love you 3000.
Until Next Time…
